We Welcome James to the Flight Instructor Team!

Monday 4th June 2018

Since our last update, James has been working extraordinarily hard to achieve his Flight Instructor rating and passed with flying colours when it came to his assessment of competence.

James has spent the last couple of months under the supervision of our FIC Instructor, Captain Simon Wiles, learning all he needs to know to join Helicentre Aviation’s team of highly qualified Flight Instructors. His training revolved around learning how to teach students on the Private Pilots Licence course. This included learning the different teaching processes and methods to be able to deliver pre-flight and post flight briefings, theoretical knowledge instruction as well as being able to critique and evaluate students.

Since being awarded the 2014 CPL(H) scholarship, James went on to gain his CPL(H) in 2016 and join our team of Commercial Pilots. Since then, James spent around a year piloting our experience and charter flights, which we run for the public. Whilst working as a Commercial Pilot, James said: “Flying commercially has been amazing as it has allowed me to indulge in my passion for flying, whilst being paid for the privilege. The hours I have built up so far have helped me an enormous amount to prepare for my Flight Instructor course.”

This year James returned to take his FI course and begin a new chapter in his flying career. After passing his Assessment of Competence, Jame said: “ The last couple of months have been intense due to the amount of work involved in the Flight Instructor training process but it was definitely worth it, I couldn’t be happier. I would like to say thank you to Helicentre Aviation once again for awarding me the CPL(H) scholarship back in 2014, which allowed me to continue through my training at a rate I could have never imagined. I am excited to start on this new chapter in my flying career and cannot wait to begin teaching the new PPL(H) students.”

James will now continue working as both a flight instructor and commercial pilot for our charter and pleasure flying operations building invaluable experience along the way.

James Begins his Flight Instructor Course

Tuesday 1st May 2018

In 2014, James from Leicester was awarded our CPL(H) Scholarship, which helped fund him through all the post PPL(H) training he needed to reach a Commercial Pilot status. This included the ATPL(H) Theoretical Knowledge course, hour building, an R44 Type Rating and the Commercial Course itself.

Over the course of James’s hour building, he had an amazing opportunity to travel to Poland and fly a new addition to Helicentre’s fleet back to the UK, as well as trips to Ireland and lots of local flying both the R44 and Cabri G2. This involved flying into lots of posh hotels for afternoon tea; all paid for by Helicentre Aviation (the flying, not the afternoon tea!).

James went on to gain his CPL(H) in 2016 and join our team of Commercial Pilots. Since then, James has spent around a year piloting our experience and charter flights, which we run for the public. Whilst working as a Commercial Pilot, James said: “Flying commercially has been amazing as it has allowed me to indulge in my passion for flying, whilst being paid for the privilege. The hours I have built up so far have helped me an enormous amount to prepare for my Flight Instructor course next year.”

James is now back at Helicentre and has begun his training as part of the Flight Instructor course, which he is hoping to finish at the end of this month. Once passed as a Flight Instructor, James will begin woking at Helicentre Aviation teaching the new budding pilots that come through our doors. James said: “I am so thankful to Helicentre for giving me the opportunity to continue my training after I completed my PPL(H). It has allowed me to advance at a rate I could have never have imagined and it is the reason I am where I am today. I would encourage everyone who is looking to pursue a career as a helicopter pilot to apply and the fact they now offer part-funded scholarships gives applicants an even bigger chance of being awarded some much needed funding.”

If you’d like to follow in James’ footsteps, you can send us an enquiry by filling out our online enquiry form or call us on 0116 259 0186. For FAQs and information about our past winners, please visit the relevant tabs at the top of the page.

James is back in the air pleasure flying

Saturday 25th February 2017

James was flying for us again this Saturday when he Captained one our R44 helicopters to carry out pleasure flying activites.

It was a busy session for James with over 20 flights in a reasonably short period of time. This didn't phase him, however, with the day flowing nicely and all passengers enjoying themselves and giving high praise to James and the team on the day.

We look forward to James flying for us on future pleasure flying days, of which there are a lot lined up this year.

James updates us on the rest of his 2016 flying year

Wednesday 14th December 2016

I've had an enjoyable and successful first year as a commercial pilot. I have flown countless passengers around the midlands over the summer, many of whom had never flown in a helicopter (or even flown) before. It has been a real privilege to give so many people their first taste of flight.

The biggest challenge over the past year has been adapting to the rigours of commercial flying where any unnecessary time spent on the ground starts eating into profit margins. This requires still completing all checks properly and carefully as well as expeditiously! The work can also be quite intense with up to 3 hours of flying in a day made up of individual 5 minute flights with rotors running passenger changes - and sometimes not even operating from an airport.

Above all it has been amazing to indulge in my passion to fly and be paid for the privilege. The hours I have built this season have helped me hugely towards what I need to start my flying instructor's course later next year.
